Recent developments in financial markets have resulted in the fast growth of derivative instruments such as futures, options, and swaps. These instruments are widely used for risk management. However, several events (e.g. Orange Country in 1994 and Barings in 1995) demonstrate that mismanagement of risk can lead to disastrous consequences. Modern financial managers must be prepared to handle these instruments properly for managing risk for their corporations if they are to compete in the world market. As Hong Kong expands its role as the leading financial centre of the Asia-Pacific region, there will be increasing demand for financial engineers.
