A recent survey has indicted that more andmore Chinese people in Hong Kong Have English first name.
Write an article entitled ‘English Names’for your school magazine. Explain why English first names have become sopopular, and evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using English firstnames in Hong Kong.

It is commonthat many people in Hong Kong have theirEnglish names when they are working, studying or dating. It seems that Hong Kong people do not use their Chinese names anymore.However, some people have different feeling about this phenomenon. Why do theyhave this feeling? Why do many people use English as usual?
Oneof the most noticeable causes leading people using English name is famous starsusing it. Many famous stars, especially singers, have their own English nameswhish is common in Hong Kong. Some of theirfans may follow their behaviours, clothes and names because they want to bethem. These teenagers tend to copy whatever their stars do, including usingtheir English names. Even better, it becomes a trend which let more and morepeople follow. This is why so many people using English names in Hong Kong.
Anotherreason accounting for Hong Kong people usingEnglish names commonly is convenient. Many people tend to have their firstnames because it is easy for everyone to call them. In schools, many teachersare fond of calling students with their English names, so these teachers tendto write down their English names when the school term started. When teacherswant students to answer their questions, they can only call their English namesinstead of their Chinese full names. Without English names, people may usetheir Chinese full names which are very difficult to name and write down. Itmay cause time-consuming in their tests. Thins is why so many Hong Kong people using it.
Apart from theconvenience of English names, English names are easy to memories. In Hong Kong, most people who have three to four words ofnames which are very difficult to remember. People will pave the way for memoryand they are using English names in a wide range of places. In offices, manycompanies want their employees using simple English names, not complicated Chinesenames. This is why Hong Kong people like touse English names.
Contraryto what benefits of using English names, some English names tend to distinguishone from one difficulty. Many people are willing to use common names, includingAnn, Tom as well as Amy. These names are trouble for people to distinguish.When I was in a school, I had three classmates who all called Tom which was atroublesome to my teachers. It was because teaches cannot separate themcorrectly.
Meanwhile,Chinese names tend to fade down when they use English names very often. If theyuse English names more times, they will forget our real Chinese names whichwere named by their parents. When the people were born, their parents named theirnames with many meanings. These Chinese names are very meaningful for them and theirparents. If they forget it, it means they do not respect to their parents.Therefore, using English names do not respect to parents.
Besides,using English names tend to forget Chinese cultures. All Chinese names dateform Chinese histories and cultures. Many people using English in the societythat no one call Chinese names anymore. It tend to Chinese cultures disappears.This is a Chinese city, not others. If we call friends, relatives or parentsEnglish names , we might be other counties, not china. It will let our culturesfar away from years.
Allin all, using English names has its benefits and drawbacks. In fact, we shouldhave clear mind to use it not misuse it.
