Personally suggest you go to Chinatown for bus ticket to DC.
The bus will also stop by Philly which you may consider to visit if you want. Amtrack or Greyhound are expensive, and take longer than those Chinatown Bus. The chinatown Bus take around 5 hrs from NYC to DC

By the way, you can also find Bus run between Boston and NYC. Just for your information.
